Explosion in Masamba’s prison

On the first of January, the Bukavu prison experienced a violent prison break-out attempt. Eight prisoners have been killed and 47 were seriously injured by a grenade explosion. An army officer in preventive custody had smuggled the grenade into the prison in order to blow up the main gate. The cause of the tragedy appears to be conflict between prisoners over the election of a new prisoner-representative.

Human rights experts claim such break-out attempts are the direct consequence of the inhumane living conditions in the prison and the non-respect of the rights of prisoners.

Even though access to the prison was difficult to arrange, the field assistant of Justice for Sale immediately went to the prison to check on Masamba. He managed to confirm that Masamba is not harmed but obviously extremely shocked by what had happened.
